Hardwood Stairs

Role: Design + Re-Build + Install

Stage: Finished

Year: 2022

From top to bottom the original staircase and landing were reimagined with Hickory stair treads and white painted risers. The stairs’ original skirtboard was kept in place but needed to be widened to fit the deeper stair treads. I’ve detailed that process here. All treads, risers and landing pieces were custom fit.

Before

A hard landing

The desired look was unfussy with minimal trim. Thorough planning, accurate measurements, executional precision were crucial. As seen here, the flooring flows into the landing which “sits” directly on-top of and its face is flush to the left stair skirtboard with the stairs’ nosing plunging into it.

A ~9 ft. floor plank was mitered and another mitered piece was attached (via biscuits & glue) to create a lip of 1.5” to cover the subfloor and provide more visual weight.

With the mitered landing piece in place, the remain floor planks were installed at the top of the stairs and finally the nosing was cross-cut to size and installed.
