A labor of love. It’s a long process from demo to sub-floor prep to install. In fact, it was one of the largest components of a home remodel. The hickory hardwood flooring — supplied by Vermont Plank Flooring and Schaefer Hardwood Flooring — was installed throughout our ~1,500 sq. ft. home with no trim separating the flow between rooms! I learned some valuable lessons about wood movement, moisture content and acclimation that I feel have made me a better woodworker.

Here’s a brief look at laying hardwood flooring in our dormer.

Let there be flooring!

  • Separating the floor planks allows for airflow which is crucial to fully acclimate the wood to the home’s humidity.

  • An elastic hardwood flooring glue is applied to the bottom of the planks then nailed into place.

  • It’s best practice to clamp the rows together while the glue dries.

  • Finishing touches are to apply nosing at the stairs and trim at the exterior doors’ thresholds.

  • The new flooring flows continuous from room to room with no awkward breaks.
